Linda's MS Office Tips

Quickies In Word

Do you find that there are certain things you type over and over in your Word documents and you would like a way to speed this up? Well, Word has a feature called AutoCorrect that will let you do just that.

Let's say you have to type your company's name in many documents and the name of your company is Macalhaney's Refurbished Furniture, Inc. Try this. Go to your Tools menu and select AutoCorrect. At the top of this box, you will see four tabs. Make sure you are on the one that says AutoCorrect and look at the list in the white box at the bottom. This is a list of all the words and phrases that Word will automatically correct for you and you can add to this. In the box that says "Replace:", type "mrf" (without the quotes) and in the box that says "With:", type Macalhaney's Refurbished Furniture, Inc. Then click on the Add button and it is added to the list. Also, be sure there is a check in the box above this that says "Replace text as you type" or this won't work. Then, click on OK.

Now go into a document and type mrf and there's your company name.

Now, go back into that autocorrect box and look at some of the other
things in that list. This might explain to you why every time you try to
type a C in parentheses, Word keeps turning it into a copyright symbol.
What if you just want to have a C in parentheses? You can either
remove this auto-correction completely by clicking on it in the list and
clicking on the button that says Delete or, if you only want to turn it
off for one particular document, just remove the check from "Replace
text as you type." Then, you can recheck that later if you want your
auto-corrections to work again.

Try making a simple one for your name. I have one set up to change
lj to Linda F. Johnson. Just be careful if your initials are something that
is a real word. For example, if your name is Merrill Estenbrook, you
wouldn't want Word to change the word "me" to your full name every
time you type it.

Hang in there!
